Itâs been a long, long time coming, but everyoneâs schedules got all turned around When COVID-19 hit. But Activision, Treyarch and Raven Software are finally getting ready to reveal Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War, the next game in the storied Call of Duty franchise. Itâs happening today, August 26, inside of Call of Duty: Warzone, which is a brand-new choice of virtual venue for a very different sort of year.
We donât know a huge amount , but we do have some information from key art and datamined files. Weâll update this story once we have more information after the reveal, but hereâs what we (probably) know so far.
Itâs a direct sequel toâ Call of Duty: Black Opsâ: Black Ops is an interesting sub-franchise, covering everything from Vietnam to near-future to a sort of cyber-bro sci-fi scenario in Black Ops 3, and even a campaign-less entry in Black Ops 4. But this one seems to be getting back to its roots, which is apparent from both the name and the key art. Datamined info suggests repeat appearances from characters like James Woods, Alex Mason and Jason Huson.
A description of the game found in last nightâs Modern Warfare update contains some more information, via COD Tracker:
âBlack Ops Cold War will drop fans into the depths of the Cold Warâs volatile geopolitical battle of the early 1980s. Nothing is ever as it seems in a gripping single-player Campaign, where players will come face-to-face with historical figures and hard truths, as they battle around the globe through iconic locales like East Berlin, Vietnam, Turkey, Soviet KGB headquarters and more.
As elite operatives, you will follow the trail of a shadowy figure named Perseus who is on a mission to destabilize the global balance of power and change the course of history. Descend into the dark center of this global conspiracy alongside iconic characters Woods, Mason and Hudson and a new cast of operatives attempting to stop a plot decades in the making.â
It will have zombies: Zombies are a Treyarch staple, first spotted in World at War and showing up in the developerâs games since. The description in the game files also points to a Zombies mode, and it will have a tough time following the expansice zombies from Black Ops 4.
The reveal is coming tomorrow: By all accounts, it seems like the reveal of Black Ops: Cold War will be Warzoneâs first live event, though we donât yet know what that looks like in a Call of Duty context. To see whatâs what, make sure your game is updated and show up at this time.
Youâll likely have to pay extra for PS5 and Xbox Series X: More datamined info points to both a standard and âcross-genâ version, suggesting that thereâs going to be an upcharge if you want the next-gen version when it comes out.
Release Date: According to the leak, the release date will be quite a bit later than usual.
