Green Party Presidential Candidate Howie Hawkins Calls Cleveland Debate ‘Fraud’, Opposes Abolition Of Police

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Howie Hawkins, the Green Party presidential candidate, was in Cleveland for Tuesday’s presidential debate – not to participate, but to criticize the event as a « fraud » and draw attention to his positions on police reform and other issues

Speaking with Cleveland Outside the Cleveland Museum of Art, Hawkins noted that the Presidential Debates Commission, which has hosted major party presidential debates since 1988, was organized by Republicans and Democrats

« It’s set up to exclude the rest of us, » Hawkins said, noting that he had voted in 30 states – including Ohio, as an independent – and that the Libertarian candidate for Presidential Jo Jorgensen was on the ballot in all 50 states

“I think a four-way debate would be much more interesting for the American people,” he said, later adding, “We have constructive things that should be heard, and they will not be heard. in this debate «

Speaking about police reform – a burning issue that has grown even more burning since the death of Minneapolis resident George Floyd in May – Hawkins said ‘use of force’ reforms were not enough Instead, he said, he prefers local police departments to be headed by elected commissioners or even selected by lot, like juries.

Such a step, he said, « would wipe out the unions in the police and the real estate industry – everyone who created the police as they are – they would eliminate the forces of the racists and sadists, oversee policies and budgets, investigate and discipline wrongdoing »

Hawkins noted that his hometown police department of Syracuse, New York, had operated under a federal consent decree for 40 years – eight times longer than the consent decree of Cleveland – but he didn’t end the police brutality

Hawkins agreed with Newark Mayor Ras Baraka’s statement that seeking to « abolish the police » is a « liberal bourgeois » idea that ignores the need for someone to respond to acts of violence and abuse

« I am not for the abolition of the police, » said Hawkins « I want good police that don’t harass us but solve serious crime »

Hawkins said that instead of defunding the police, the federal government should create a domestic Marshall Plan that would help rebuild cities in the same way the US offered massive help to rebuild Europe after the Second World War

When asked what Hawkins would say to people who might think they would reject their vote by voting for him this year, he replied that Democratic candidate Joe Biden opposes Liberal proposals such as the Green New Deal

However, Hawkins added, he knows that Biden and Trump are neck and neck in the Ohio polls, so he would « not stand up to anyone » in Buckeye State who voted for Biden

« But I think all over the country – I mean if Biden loses, it won’t be my fault, » said Hawkins. « It’s gonna be his bloody fault »

Jorgensen, meanwhile, was also in Cleveland on Tuesday night, where she took part in a Facebook Live chat:
