Hull City get their just reward in shoot-out

Marcelo Bielsa cut a frustrated, agitated figure for long periods of this Carabao Cup second-round tie, not least during a nerve-racking shoot-out, but his much changed, spluttering Leeds United side were fortunate even to make it to penalties. Hull City showed the type of urgency and energy usually associated with Bielsa’s Leeds, were comfortably the better side and led through Mallik Wilks’s early strike until Egzjan Alioski equalised with seconds remaining.

Hull deserved this. It was not simply the way Grant McCann’s side held their nerve in an epic 20-kick penalty denouement, it was the intensity of their play for 89 minutes, with Wilks outstanding in the first half in particular. Hull harried Leeds, as if they had borrowed Bielsa’s playbook.
