The Orioles announced they’ve made their second trade of the day, moving on from relief pitcher Mychal Givens. In return, the Orioles will receive Tyler Nevin, Terrin Vavra and a player to be named later.
The move was announced on the same day as the trade of starting pitcher Tommy Milone to the Atlanta Braves. Major League Baseball’s trade deadline is at 4 p.m. on Monday.
Givens, a 2009 second-round choice of the Orioles, has been with the organization since and made his debut in June, 2015. This season, he’s appeared in 12 games and has posted a 1.38 ERA in 13 innings pitched. He’s also got a 2.60 FIP and a 1.000 WHIP.
Givens, 30, has been with the Orioles for six seasons and has posted a career 3.32 ERA.
The team’s return of Nevin and Vavra gives them two Orioles infield prospects from the Rockies, along with a player to be named later. Vavra was Colorado’s seventh ranked prospect while Nevin was Colorado’s 14th, according to MLB.com’s prospect rankings.
Vavra, 23, attended the University of Minnesota and was a third round choice of the Rockies in 2018. A middle infielder, Vavra spent 2019 in Single-A for the Asheville Tourists. He slashed .318/.409/.489 with 10 home runs in 102 games. He played 53 games at shortstop and 41 games at second base.
Vavra’s scouting report lists him as an offensive-minded utility player who could hit his way into the lineup each day with above average patience at the plate.
Nevin was a first round choice of the Rockies in 2015, but only reached as high as Double-A ball. For the Hartford Yard Goats in 2019, he slashed .251/.345/.399 with 13 home runs in 130 games. He played 98 games at first base, 12 games at third and totaled eight games in the outfield.
Nevin, 23, projects as a corner infielder who could hit for a solid average at the big league level.
