Sydney sweltered on Thursday, with temperatures up in the 30s, accompanied by hot, dry winds.

But as the day drew to a close, what meteorologists call a southerly bluster moved up the NSW coast, dropping temperatures by five to 10 degrees.

Thursday afternoon’s strong, cool winds are just a prelude to what is set to be a wet weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts a trough will begin to move across NSW from late Friday, bringing the risk of severe thunderstorms, especially to areas in the state’s west.

The trough will linger over NSW and parts of the ACT over the weekend, bringing showers to most areas.

Severe thunderstorm warnings could be issued over the weekend for some inland parts of the state and a strong wind warning is in place for coastal areas along Sydney, the Hunter, the Illawarra, Batemans Bay and Eden until midnight Thursday.

By Monday, temperatures are forecast to have risen again to 27 degrees, and 25 on Tuesday.
