Several black college basketball head coaches will honor the late John Thompson by wearing a towel over their right shoulder at the season opener.
ESPN’s Myron Medcalf reported that some coaches will be performing the gesture during the 2020-21 season. None of the participating trainers was publicly identified.
« We talked about how we can honor him and his legacy, » said one head coach. « I’ll have every game [a towel]. «
The legendary Georgetown coach wore a towel over his right shoulder throughout his career that led the Hoyas to three Final Four appearances and the 1984 national championship. Georgetown made the NCAA tournament for 14 consecutive seasons from 1979 to 1992 and achieved the dance a total of 20 times in Thompson’s tenure.
In addition to his coaching skills, Thompson was also known to his players as an extremely protective father figure and an advocate of racial justice. Allen Iverson accused Thompson of saving his life by taking a chance on him in Georgetown.
Numerous other players and coaches have cited Thompson as inspiration, both for his success on the pitch and for his grace.
