Severe storms with heavy rain, noxious winds and large hail are on the agenda for the southeast, while the former tropical cyclone Imogen could cause « life-threatening flash floods » in the far north.

Widespread showers of up to 40 millimeters are forecast for Brisbane on Thursday, but six-hour total values of 300 millimeters are possible in the far north of Queensland, warns the Bureau of Meteorology.

Meteorologist Pieter Claassen said severe storms were on the agenda for Brisbane’s west and east Darling Downs on Wednesday, with significant rainfall, dangerous gusts of wind and hail.

« Then on Thursday a trough will pull through to the southeast coast to cool things down and deliver wider showers, » he said.

« It depends on the timing of a storm in Brisbane on Thursday, but it will be pretty cloudy . . . with very isolated storm activity, but it’s more about the Thursday showers.

Meanwhile, the former tropical cyclone Imogen sat about 230 kilometers southwest of Cairns on Tuesday morning, moving slowly towards the tropical north coast.

« Six-hourly precipitation amounts between 150 and 200 millimeters are possible. Periods of local heavy rainfall are also possible, leading to life-threatening flash floods, with six-hour totals of 300 millimeters around the coast and ranges in the warning area, « warned the Bureau of Meteorology.

« A trough extends east from Ex-Imogen through the tropical north coast and the tablelands south of Innisfail and is expected to slowly move south on Tuesday.

« The heaviest rainfall is currently falling on the eastern flank of the low in the central and lower part of the Herbert River Valley, although rainfall rates have not been high for the past six hours.

« There is still potential for widespread heavier rainfall to develop through the warning area between Tully and Townsville over the next six hours, extending southeast to Ayr for the remainder of Tuesday. Areas with heavy rain may later develop into the Babinda area north of Tully. «

Mr Claassen said there was widespread rainfall of more than 200 millimeters inland from Cairns and Innisfail in the far north of Queensland on Monday, with more forecasts on Tuesday.

« We expect very widespread sums of 100 to 200 millimeters along the coast north of Cairns and south of Ingham on Tuesday, » he said.

« There should be widespread falls of 100 to 200 millimeters, 200 to 300 millimeters from isolated falls, and even six-hourly rainfall in excess of 300 millimeters. «

Areas north of Babinda are no longer likely to rain heavily. However, thunderstorm activity can lead to more localized heavy rainfall in this area, especially on Tuesday afternoons. If necessary, severe thunderstorm warnings will be issued for this activity.

A flood watch and flood warnings remain in the area. Locations that may be affected include Townsville, Ingham, Cardwell, Ayr, Giru, Atherton, Ravenshoe, Greenvale and Charters Towers.

A house en route to Tropical Cyclone Imogen « didn’t stop shaking for four or five hours » on Sunday evening and Monday morning when the Category 1 system hit northwest Queensland.

It generated gusts of wind of 105 km / h, released more than 200 millimeters of rain in several locations, and left 1,400 residents without electricity and without a time frame in which to reconnect.
