Paul Gallen says preparing for his fight with Mark Hunt was different from any other fights he had over one cause – travel.

In addition to a torn bicep, the former NSW captain faced the burden of traveling from Sydney to attend sparring sessions for his upcoming fight against MMA legend on the Tim Tszyu vs Bowyn Morgan map on Jan.. To contest December.

The former Sharks skipper spoke to Wide World of Sports last month and said it was difficult to find sparring partners as many fighters feel a sense of loyalty to Hunt and don’t want to be seen helping his opponent.

The Sharks Premier League captain will travel to Queensland today to spare Australian heavyweight Alex Leapai tomorrow. He had to travel all over Sydney to get the right number of laps to prepare for the Super Samoan. .

« It was pretty difficult to find a sparring partner for most of the prep, but the last four or five weeks have been fine, » Gallen told Sky Sports Radios The Big Sports Breakfast.

« A lot has been traveled. I’ve been to Campbelltown, Minto on the Central Coast and I’m going to Queensland tomorrow to save up so there has been a lot.

« He’s almost like the godfather of martial arts in Australia and all these guys look up to him.

« People I would normally spare, a lot of West Sydney people who have a relationship with Mark Hunt wouldn’t save.

« I don’t think it was Mark, I don’t think he’s the type to say he won’t help him. I think it was more the respect they have for him. «

Hunt has not fought since losing at UFC Adelaide in late 2018, but is clearly the most successful fighter Gall has faced in his 10-fight career. The big fight started a storm this week when he announced he had texted Gallen to ask if he was using steroids to recover from the bicep injury.

The former NRL star was a senior player with the Sharks when the club was embroiled in a peptide scandal in 2011. However, he’s tired of having to defend himself against claims of using performance-enhancing drugs.

« I’m pretty happy to be given a drug test anytime, » said Gallen. « What happened at Cronulla in 2011 was a club problem, things that were provided by the club.

« I am disappointed that no official took the blame and paid the price we players have. ASADA should test us for this fight; It’s a big event and I’m surprised I haven’t been tested yet. «
