Novak Djokovic has shown his support for Alexander Zverev over allegations against him of domestic abuse

Novak Djokovic supported the idea of tennis to develop a policy of domestic violence and offered Alexander Zverev very public support.

The German season ended with a 6: 3, 7: 6 (4) defeat against Djokovic at the Nitto ATP final, which led the world number one to a semi-final against US Open champion Dominic Thiem on Saturday.

Zverev has competed under the sizeable shadow of serious abuse claims from his ex-girlfriend Olga Sharypova.

He strongly denies the allegations the former junior player has made on Instagram and in two media interviews, but has not addressed them in detail.

The ATP has been criticized for making public comment just last week when it issued a general statement saying it « fully condemns any form of violence or abuse ». .

Zverev isn’t the only tennis player to have faced similar allegations recently. Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili was in court last month to answer charges against his ex-wife.

Several major American sports have a policy setting out a procedure to be followed in such situations, and Djokovic believes that tennis should go down the same path.

He said: « I’ve known Sascha (Zverev) for a very long time since he was very young. I’ve always had a great relationship with him, he’s a very nice guy, I have a lot of respect for him, his family. I was sad to hear that he was going through something like this.

« I don’t know what happened. Obviously I don’t support any kind of violence. Should ATP develop a policy? Yes why not. It should probably be there. «

Tennis has largely closed down near Zverev, with Australian Daria Gavrilova being a notable exception when she says she believes Sharypova and Djokovic caused critical reactions by telling his friend in a message on Twitter: « Best wishes for what awaits you again and again.  » the court. «

He had previously said at a press conference: « I sincerely wish him that he will soon overcome this and concentrate on his life and his tennis career. «

Zverev again implied that he would not take legal action – which Sharypova has also said – and declared, despite the allegations and the coronavirus pandemic, that it had been a « great year ». .

The 23-year-old said: « Unfortunately I lost a lot of big games. I lost the semi-finals in Australia that I could have won. I lost the US Open final that I should have won. Final in Bercy (the Paris Masters). This match here.

« The US Open game obviously still hurts, but everyone else is great to be playing at this level again. «

Djokovic’s victory means that the top four seeds have only reached the semifinals for the second time since 1990. Rafael Nadal has faced Daniil Medvedev in the last four games at London’s O2 Arena.

Heading for a record sixth title, Djokovic was still not at his best but played and fought much better than he did in his convincing loss to Medvedev on Wednesday.

He won the first seven points of the game and then took whatever Zverev threw at him in the second set before playing a near-perfect tie.

Djokovic has beaten Thiem in seven of his eleven encounters, but the Austrian prevailed in London and in the semi-finals of the French Open last year before Djokovic retaliated with five sets in a final of the Australian Open.

« I have a lot of respect for Dominic, his game, his work ethic, » said Djokovic. « Every time we got to play in the last three or four games, it was a marathon, exciting encounters.

« It’s semi-finals so I expect a tough fight. He is in very good shape. He loves to play on this surface. He played the final last year, defeating Roger (Federer) and me.

« He’s a Grand Slam champion, which is obviously a huge boost for him. If I can play as well as I do today and show up with a high quality tennis, I have a good chance of winning. I just hope I can start the game as well as I did today. «

Medvedev has yet to drop one more set and hold his unbeaten record with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Diego Schwartzman, who won no match on his debut.

Medvedev led Nadal 5-1 in the third set of a round robin bout last year, only to lose, while he was beaten by the Spaniard in five sets in the 2019 US Open final.

The Russian said: « I like to play Rafa, Novak and Roger. They were idols who grew up. I’m really looking forward to the game. I am confident. I think Rafa is too. «
