World News – AU – Cummins in search of full game after tough IPL start

It didn’t go exactly as planned with the ball but the Aussie pace ace feels he is getting closer to a breakout performance

Pat Cummins is set to release an unwanted century in Indian Premier League

Spearhead Kolkata Knight Riders is averaging 9,866 with the ball in the IPL this season, having taken three wickets in 10 games for the mighty franchise which paid $ 3 million at the player auction of last year for his services

But despite the lean trot, Cummins conceded a respectable 822 points per over for a fast bowler who played in the first six passes of Powerplay when the field is in place, and at the end of an inning when batters in the ‘opposition try to hit every ball to the limit

This is why the paceman says he is « relatively happy » with the way he plays bowling during his first IPL stint since 2017 with the Delhi Capitals

“I feel like my pace and the ball are coming out pretty well – I just don’t have the wickets, which can sometimes happen in this format,” Cummins said on cricketcom’s The Unplayable podcast from au

« Some days you play well and you don’t take a wicket, and other days you play badly and take three or four It’s just the nature of the game

« I feel like I haven’t made a full game yet There are always a few balls in every game you want to have back

Cummins has had a mixed start to the 2020 season, based in the United Arab Emirates due to the COVID-19 pandemic

In his first outing in purple and gold, the 27-year-old conceded 0-49 in three times against Mumbai, before taking a 2-32 combined in seven times in his next two games.

But another 0-49 spell followed, this time against his former Delhi franchise, to put further pressure on the tournament’s highest-paid foreign player

In his next six games, he’s conceded over 75 points by just more than twice as KKR recorded three wins to take his season tally to five wins and as many losses to sit in the fourth place in the ranking

While he says all elite cricketers put pressure on each other to perform, Cummins thinks part of him is feeling the expectations that come with his award.

« I would say no, but of course there probably is, deep down, » Cummins said when asked if he feels extra expectation because of his salary

« The staff and players here were brilliant in identifying that this was a long tournament

« I only played a few IPL seasons and I feel like I haven’t had this big season or few games, so (I’m) really keen to make an impact

« I feel like pieces are coming together, so I just need some good games »

As Cummins’ T20 bowling gradually improves, their T20 stick has taken to a new level

The right-hander has been working hard on his offensive stroke play during his time with NSW this preseason, having focused on defense in the Australian test squad

Those slogging net sessions paid off in the second leg against Mumbai, when he scored his first half-century T20 – an unbeaten 53 on 36 balls with five fours and two sixes

« The last few years I’ve played a lot of test matches so I feel like I’ve become a bit of a blocker and sometimes I lost my momentum (when) trying to hit the strong bullet, « he said

« That was really my goal for a few months, just trying to start swinging the bat a little more and finding some form

« I feel like for the last few years I’ve been blocking the swinging ball and trying to survive, so it’s okay to try and hit some fours and sixes »
