KARACHI: Fast-paced bowler Dilbar Hussain has credited Lahore Qalandars, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise, with his meteoric rise, signing for Big Bash League (BBL) side Melbourne Stars for a second year in a row.
Hussain, who worked on agricultural land until a few years ago, is another product of the Qalandars’ talent search program that Haris Rauf had previously discovered.
Lahore Qalandars’ director of cricket operations Aaqib Javed discovered him in 2018 and has been a regular PSL player ever since and now also visits the BBL.
Hussain also played a game in the BBL last season as a replacement for Rauf. On his BBL debut, he took the wicket of AB de Villiers at MCG.
The 27-year-old fast bowler, who rarely played professional cricket before 2018, has recognized Qalandars management for his growth as a professional cricketer.
« Without Lahore Qalandars, who gave me and many others a platform like the Players Development Program to demonstrate our skills, this would not have been possible, » he said.
“The program is a ray of hope for many cricketers like me, who otherwise would have given up their dreams of cricket at the highest level due to a lack of opportunities. «
The fast bowler replied to a question that he was excited to be a part of Melbourne Stars again and that this would be an opportunity to improve his skills.
« This is a great opportunity for me to play in Australia where I know I can learn a lot in order to improve my game, » he said.
Hussain has also received praise from David Hussey, former Australian cricketer and Melbourne Stars head coach.
« He’s a real bowler with 140 km / h, a good Yorker and an incredibly slower ball. With another year of experience and his time at PSL, we are excited to see what Hussain will bring to the table for us this year. The fact that not many players have played against him before can be a real advantage for us, ”Hussey said in a statement from Melbourne Stars.
Sameen Rana, COO of Lahore Qalandars, said Rauf’s development into an international star and Hussain’s growth are an indicator that Qalandar’s player development program is going in the right direction and doing the right things for the country.
« Being at Melbourne Stars is not only a great opportunity for Hussain, but also a good sign for the future of Pakistan cricket, » Rana told Geo. TV.
