Cardinal George Pell received a warm welcome when he met Pope Francis at the Vatican, during a meeting which would have gone « very well »

Pope Francis met Cardinal George Pell, warmly welcoming him for a private audience at the Apostolic Palace following the cardinal’s conviction and acquittal for sexual abuse in Australia

The Vatican released a brief video clip of the meeting, a clear sign that the Pontiff and Cardinal Pell wanted the reception to be widely seen

But while a meeting between the head of the Roman Catholic Church and the man he once referred to as his trusted anti-corruption czar was expected, it was not clear that Cardinal Pell would be entrusted a new role in the Vatican

In the video, Pope Francis can be heard saying « Nice to see you » and « over a year » – an apparent reference to the time Cardinal Pell spent in prison

The meeting « went very well! » said a shredder, Cardinal Pell, according to Salvatore Cernuzio, Vaticanist of the daily Stampa

Neither man wore protective masks, despite the surge in coronavirus infections in the Lazio region surrounding the Vatican, and despite the Vatican’s own admission on Monday that four Swiss guards had tested positive

Cardinal Pell returned to Rome on September 30 for the first time since 2017 to find a swirling financial corruption scandal involving half a dozen Holy See employees, including one of his Vatican enemies, Cardinal Angelo Becciu

Senior officials say he was not recalled by Pope Francis, but returned on his own initiative

Cardinal Pell, brought in by Pope Francis in 2014 to bring accountability and transparency to the opaque Vatican finances, was convicted but ultimately exonerated by Australia’s High Court of allegations he assaulted two children of choir in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne while he was Archbishop in Melbourne the 90s

He has long maintained his innocence and suggested, without evidence, that his lawsuits were linked to his efforts to clean up Vatican finances
