Matteo Guendouzi said he had to leave Arsenal to have fun as he was injured from lack of playing time in north London.
Guendouzi was banned from the Arsenal squad after clashing with Neal Maupay after a 2-1 loss to Brighton in June.
The Frenchman fell out of favor under Mikel Arteta, although he had escaped punishment from the football association for grabbing Maupay by the neck, and was finally loaned to Hertha Berlin in October.
The 21-year-old has played three games for the Bundesliga since then. His last appearance was a 2-5 defeat against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
Guendouzi says he got used to playing regularly at Arsenal after moving to Emirates Stadium from Lorient in 2018 and when that was taken away from him, he started thinking about his future.
« I had to have fun on the pitch to regain confidence, and that’s what Hertha offers me. It really is a decision that I made, « the Gunners borrower told Telefoot.
Guendouzi is also aiming to become a full French international, having previously represented his country at the under 21, under 20, under 19 and under 18 levels.
« It’s been a dream since I was little. To be part of it was wonderful, « he added.
« I still have in the back of my mind to deserve a lot more selections and be important in the future. «
Guendouzi is still under contract with Arsenal until 2022, but club legend Kevin Campbell is among those who believe the playmaker has already burned his bridges in north London.
“He has no future at Arsenal. Mikel Arteta took him into custody after last season’s game in Brighton, that was it – custody, « Campbell said earlier this month.
« A manager like Arteta wants to see that you can keep the line, take your sentence, keep your trap closed and get to work. Guendouzi couldn’t do it. «
Guendouzi will be back in action with Hertha when they go on a trip to Bayer Leverkusen next weekend.
