It is a well-known fact that rumors and jokes can run uncontrollably and unchallenged on the internet leading to the sharing of wrong information everywhere
The popular Corn Flakes breakfast cereal has been the subject of much speculation on the internet, with a viral myth about its origins now better known than its true history
So why were Corn Flakes invented – and is there any truth to this strange rumor?
Corn flakes were invented by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, an American physician, nutritionist, inventor and health activist
He was the director of Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan, a world-famous spa resort that was founded by the Seventh-day Adventist Church
The Sanitarium combined aspects of a spa, a hydrotherapy institution, a hospital and a high-class hotel
He has also devoted the last 30 years of his life to the promotion of eugenics, practices aimed at improving the genetic makeup of the human race by excluding people and groups deemed inferior
Kellogg discouraged race mixing and supported the sterilization of people with intellectual disabilities
The online myth says that Corn Flakes were originally created for the purpose of encouraging people to stop masturbating
Rumor has it that Dr John Harvey Kellogg believed sex was harmful to people’s physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. He personally abstained from sex and all of his children were adopted
Kellogg said masturbation can lead to mood swings, stiff joints, acne and epilepsy, and his solution to this was to follow a healthy diet.
He believed that foods with certain flavors or seasonings actually increased libido, and believed that simple foods like grains and nuts might help decrease it
Snopes explains that while Corn Flakes were « part of Kellogg’s larger advocacy for a simple, bland diet, » they were never advertised as « an anti-masturbatory morning meal »
Kellogg advocated for a clean life and practiced abstinence from sex, as well as recommending a bland diet as one of the many methods to discourage masturbation – however, he never specifically referred to Corn Flakes.
Snopes Says: “Based on the available evidence, corn flakes were primarily created as an easy-to-digest, pre-prepared, and healthy breakfast, especially for patients at Kellogg Sanatorium in Michigan. »
According to Howard Markel, professor of medical history at the University of Michigan and author of a book on the Kellogg family, the initial idea for the invention of Corn Flakes came from the need to create a food for breakfast that could counter indigestion
« No wonder Dr. Kellogg saw the need for a grain-based ‘healthy food’ that was ‘easy to digest’ and also easy to prepare, » says Markel
