Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti believes Alex Iwobi needs more confidence to play for Everton in the wingback position.
The 24-year-old showed an impressive performance for the Toffees in the position of right-back against Fulham last weekend.
Ancelotti has praised the Nigerian international’s impact on the game and believes he may be an option for the injured Lucas Digne if he takes on Leeds United on Saturday night.
« I was pleased with his performance [against Fulham]. He did well. He can take on this position as a full-back, ”Ancelotti told the club website.
“Iwobi is a good player, but he needs to feel that confidence, just like everyone else! It is important for Alex to feel that there are people who trust him.
“During a season, you can lose some important players and we have to deal with this situation.
“I think we will be able to adjust to the loss of Lucas Digne. We have a good squad, good substitutes in this position [full-back].
« Nkounkou has no Premier League experience but showed good quality in the game he played. It is young but has a lot of quality
« We have Jonjoe Kenny on the right, we have the option to replace and we will try. Three center-backs can be an option. Alex Iwobi can easily play as a full-back on the left. ”
Iwobi has previously stated that he is ready to play for the Goodison Park outfit in any position, but admitted that he still has a lot to learn to play in the wing-back role.
« I’ve played right-backs a couple of times with Arsenal, they wanted me to bomb and get crosses and run down the line with the ball like the first half in Fulham, » said Iwobi.
“I haven’t done a lot, but wherever I’m told to play, I try to do my best. Ben [Godfrey] and James [Rodriguez] and Doucs [Doucoure] talked to me and made it more convenient.
« Sometimes with my defensive position I didn’t know where to be, but when they helped and talked it was a lot easier.
“I’ll take the positives, but there are still things I have to learn if I want to play in this position, especially defensively.
« At least for me, when I play the right full-back, the manager has in mind that I can play left and right and in the middle anywhere.
“Anywhere he wants me to play, I can do this job. And wherever I play, I will give 100 percent for the club. ”
Iwobi has made 10 appearances for Everton in all competitions this season and is hoping to help them claim their second straight win against Leeds United.
