Supercars veteran Rick Kelly has announced his full-time retirement from racing, believing the time has come to « get off the merry-go-round »

The 37-year-old has been a regular at Supercars since 2002He started with the Holden’s Young Lions program and Walkinshaw’s K-Mart Racing Team, before he and his brother Todd created the Kelly Racing autonomous team in 2009.

Kelly has been a KR rider ever since, driving Holdens, factory-backed Nissans and, as of this year, a Ford Mustang on the road

During his full-time career Kelly racked up two Bathurst 1000 wins, 13 race wins in total, 57 podiums and was crowned 2006 Supercars Champion

« As the 2020 season draws to a close, my career as a full-time Supercar driver is coming to an end, » said Kelly

« Firstly, I really enjoyed the opportunity to drive the Ford Mustang backed by Castrol in his first year with Kelly Racing

« Many challenges were launched in 2020 with COVID and the Mustang program in its early days at Kelly Racing, both of which made the track results difficult at times

« This was not the end of the fairytale I wish I could have dated, but I have to leave the merry-go-round at some point and I personally think the right time is now

« While as a driver you always want to win, and on the road your results on the track have the biggest influence on your report card, and as you would expect from any athlete, I will be leaving wanting more

« But one thing is for sure, I will come out satisfied that I always gave my best and never gave in, no matter how far behind we were

« I’ve had a big crush over the past 20 years in motorsport, never really sit down

« So as to what the future holds for me personally, as I move away from Kelly Racing, I will first take the time to think about my decision and then plan a solid attack on the next chapter of my life, whatever «

Todd Kelly added: “Kudos to Rick for an exceptional career He made a big impact on the sport during his time as a pilot and not only had success on the track but was a leader in the sport.  » commitment of supporters and sponsors“Rick has also been a fantastic mentor to Andre [Heimgartner] and other young pilots with his approach to his role as a pilot.

« It will be quite different not having Rick behind the wheel full time, but everyone at Kelly Racing wishes Rick the best for his future and congratulates him on a successful career in Supercars. »

The ad specifically refers to a step back from ‘full-time Supercar driving commitments’, leaving the door wide open for Kelly to play an endurance role at KR or elsewhere.

When it comes to the KR seat, there are a number of potential contenders as a turbulent and ridiculous season continues to unfold

Race winner Fabian Coulthard is now in the market after being told he won’t be part of Dick Johnson Racing’s new look, which is expected to line up cars for Anton De Pasquale and Will Davison

Brodie Kostecki is another driver looking for a main safari, while the silly season’s potential wildcard is David Reynolds, whose future at Erebus Motorsport is subject to much speculation – despite his 10-year contract. years with the team

Coulthard and Reynolds have also been linked with Brad Jones Racing, which will require restructuring due to the Blanchard family-owned racing rights contract, which underpinned Macauley Jones’ entry on the move
