A few frantic opening laps saw Scott McLaughlin take first place and open up a three-second lead over Waters and Davison

The reigning king of the mountain did better at jumping the blocks and easily crossed the Monster Energy Racing team in the first straight

Meanwhile, it was madness for Brad Jones Racing after Macauley Jones’ door opened and couldn’t close It was wild scenes as the youngster whipped up Mount Panorama with his door swinging They were given a black flag and slapped with a 15 second penalty for not being at the pit earlier

Percat was stripped of his fourth place in the Top 10 Shootout due to a technical breach and will now start from 10th

His car was disqualified from the session because the No 8 Brad Jones Racing Commodore was deemed insufficient after Percat’s lap

« We weighed the car on the way out of the circuit and found it insufficient, » said Adrian Burgess, Motorsport Manager at Supercars

« The car remained seated on the pit apron for the rest of the shootout and we invited the team to re-weigh the car at the end

« We rechecked the scale with our certified weights and we are happy that due process was followed, so we sent it back to the Stewards, who disqualified the car from the session »

Bathurst 1000 icon Dick Johnson says a tribute to defending champion Scott McLaughlin’s helmet made his eyes cry

McLaughlin has ordered a special helmet for his year’s race at Mt Panorama, which marks the 40th anniversary of the infamous “rock” incident; a disaster that forced Johnson out of the 1980 race but ultimately prompted the formation of Dick Johnson Racing

The helmet pays homage to Johnson’s Tru-Blu Ford XD Falcon, featuring silhouettes of the Rocky Incident and the 1981 victorious car The helmet also features a map of the original Mt Panorama layout, as well as the Tru logos -Blu Steel Tubing and Dick Johnson Racing

McLaughlin will race in the helmet designed by Frank Stivala, in what appears to be his last Bathurst before pursuing an IndyCar career, then gift it to Johnson

« Honestly mate, it really made me cry to see something like this, » Johnson told Speedcafecom

« I really respect the guy and it’s great to see how he thinks not only of me, but of the whole team

« I think this is an incredible tribute and one that will be in the spotlight with us here I am going to buy a helmet case (for the helmet), of which I only have two helmets of my own, and which will be just above

McLaughlin said: « It’s just a tribute to DJ on the 17th, and something I can take off at the end of the race on Sunday, sign it and say thank you to DJ for the opportunity to drive the car. No17 in the 40th year «

McLaughlin, three-time Supercar champion and defending Bathurst winner, is expected to race in IndyCar after this season; still in Roger Penske’s motorsport empire, having driven for DJR Team Penske in the Australian category

McLaughlin had a rough start to the race, falling during practice, but still managed to take second on the grid Cam Waters took pole position in Saturday’s Top 10 Shootout, while the 2014 champion Chaz Mostert was third

The Bathurst 1000 will start at 11:00 a.m. AEDT on Sunday, 30 minutes earlier than originally scheduled, due to heavy rain expected later in the afternoon
