It would be the first fanatic basketball game in the state since United’s semi-final against the Sydney Kings on Jan.. March.

In most years, NBL teams cannot have access to Melbourne Park in January as it is closed to the Australian Open. With tennis expected to start in early February, there could be an opening for the NBL.

Currently, Victoria’s COVID-19 restrictions allow a crowd of 25 percent of the 10th. 500 spectators, but the two clubs hope these will improve by early January if the state’s case numbers remain minimal.

The Phoenix’s home game against Brian Goorjian’s Hawks takes place on May 14th. January at the John Cain Arena, as well as United’s game against New Zealand Breakers on January 15. January. This game could also be played on 13. January to be played.

We will do everything we can to play in front of as many fans as possible.

No venue is currently assigned to the three games, but NBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger said talks with the Victorian government would continue to secure the main venue.

« The capacities at the venues vary depending on the location. The aim, however, is to play as many games as possible in front of as many fans as possible, as the restrictions will be further relaxed in the coming months, « said Loeliger.

« We are currently in talks with the Victorian government but we prefer to play the first three games of the season at the John Cain Arena.

« But we need to be flexible in our planning and it can change due to border controls and health advice. For example, games in Adelaide are currently scheduled on the basis that the border restrictions will be lifted. ”

Talks about establishing an NBL hub in Victoria are also continuing with the government so that all nine teams could play multiple rounds across the state later in the season.

Melbourne United will play 10 games and the Phoenix will play between Jan.. January and the 14th. Play nine games in February, which makes for a hectic start.

United CEO Vince Crivelli said his club was confident of securing the John Cain Arena for the opening games.

« We are working at interesting times and there are many stakeholders, but I am hopeful, » said Crivelli.

« We will do everything we can to play in front of as many fans as possible. «

Phoenix executive Tommy Greer said the combination of a « throwdown » against United and Goorjian’s first game in Melbourne was ideal.

« There really is no better way to end a season than with a game like this against Melbourne. Then it’s great to bring Brian Goorjian and [youngest NBA player] Deng Adel here. «

The Breakers will start their season in Melbourne and the NBL will try to plan the majority of their away games in the first half of the season in the hopes that they can return to New Zealand later if hopes of travel between the two nations will be further relaxed.

Loeliger said the league wants all clubs to have the opportunity to play home games, which is an important source of income, but a hub remains in play for at least part of this season, with the « rolling schedule » being announced the season continues.

The playing times have yet to be confirmed pending discussions with the broadcasters and the availability of the stadium. SBS Viceland and ESPN will continue to show games along with SKY Sports in New Zealand this season.

« All teams will start the season playing in front of fans in their hometowns, with the exception of New Zealand Breakers, who are based in Melbourne and are traveling to games for the first part of the season, » said Loeliger.

« We hope the Breakers can return to New Zealand as soon as border restrictions and timing allow, and play as many games as possible in front of their fans. «

Loeliger also said the NBL Blitz preseason tournament would not take place, but the teams would schedule their own preseason games throughout December.
