The Tasmanian NBL team will be known as Jack Jumpers, after a poisonous ant species found mostly on the island
The nickname, chosen before Tridents after a shortlist of five was reduced to two, was officially confirmed on Thursday
« The Jack Jumpers logo covers all corners of the state and embodies the spirit and passion of the Tasmanian challenger, » said managing director Simon Brookhouse
Tasmania will enter the league as the 10th team for the 2021-22 season and will play largely outside the Derwent Entertainment Center in Hobart
The state has not had a team in the National Basketball League since the Hobart Devils withdrew after the 1996 competition
Social media reaction to the nickname has been mixed, with Australian great Chris Anstey among those not on board
« The @NBL takes a big step back in Tasmania, then calls them the Jack Jumpers? » My God, ”he wrote on Twitter
Cavaliers Jack are known for their unique ability to jump and their bite has been shown to be fatal in rare cases.
« Like Tasmania itself, the Jack Jumpers will be unforgettable and a team that all Tasmanians can embrace, » Brookhouse said
The Tigers and Devils have not been considered given their association with the state cricket team and the AFL teams
