World News – AU – Nathan Cleary’s redemption after Dally M shock

He missed the Dally M but Nathan Cleary was voted best of the NRL in 2020 by his peers after winning the Champion of Players award

Penrith’s half-back named Rugby League Players’ Association best gong ahead of Sunday night’s grand final

The 22-year-old edged defending champion James Tedesco for top prize, after leading the Panthers to their first pick in 17 years

In doing so, he becomes the first Penrith player to win the award, after Petero Civoniceva tied with Braith Anasta to claim it in 2008

It comes after Cleary, despite being the big favorite, was beaten at Monday night’s Dally M by Jack Wighton, with Clint Gutherson second

« Nathan produced an exceptional year for the Panthers, leading them to first minor and the Grand Final under the most challenging conditions, » said RLPA boss Clint Newton

« He will remain in our history books as the best player in the eyes of those who take the field after a season like no other

Cleary did not receive the award in person as he prepared for the decision maker, with it handed out after full time

The 22-year-old has led the NRL in assists with 24 this season and has scored seven of his own while doubling any other player’s 40-20 count

The price is determined on the votes of the players, with each poll getting 3-2-1 points without being able to vote for their teammates

Cameron Smith was named Whore of the Year, while his protégé Harry Grant was named Rookie of the Year for his work on loan at Wests Tigers

Viliame Kikau was the only other Panthers player named Team of the Year alongside Cleary, while Smith was Storm’s free agent

Meanwhile, Sydney Roosters second rower Hannah Southwell was named NRLW Player of the Year, presented the award after her big final loss to Brisbane

« Hannah has had an exceptional year for the Roosters and has been integral in their resurgence to secure a place in the decision maker after missing a chance in 2019, » Newton said

« The votes were still tight this year, with Hannah receiving ultimate recognition after a stellar season with the Habs »

The 13th Dream Team of players: James Tedesco, Brett Morris, Kotoni Staggs, Brian Kelly, David Nofoaluma, Luke Keary, Nathan Cleary, Josh Papalii, Cameron Smith, Sio Siua Taukeiaho, Viliame Kikau, Tohu Harris, Cameron McInnes
