Sydney is hit by a severe thunderstorm with large hailstones, noxious winds and heavy rain.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a detailed warning of severe thunderstorms due to heavy rainfall and harmful winds for the Greater Sydney, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury regions as well as for Gosford / Wyong, Wollongong, Maitland / Cessnock, Newcastle and for just before 5 p.m. on Monday Wollondilly / Wingecarribee out regions.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and Sydney areas.

The thunderstorms were moving east and should hit Parramatta, Baulkham Hills, Blacktown, Fairfield, Horsley Park and Riverstone by afternoon.

The state rescue service advised people to move their cars under cover and away from trees, remove loose objects from their properties, and stay away from fallen power lines.

It also warned people not to walk or ride a bike through floods, and keep children and pets indoors.

For Hunter, Metropolitan, Illawarra, South Coast, Central Plateaus, Southern Plateaus, Central West Slopes and Plains, as well as parts of the Central North Coast, Northwestern slopes and plains, Southwestern slopes, Lower is currently a severe thunderstorm warning currently being Western, Upper Western and Snowy Mountains districts.

« Severe thunderstorms can result in heavy rains which can lead to dangerous and life threatening flash floods in parts of Hunter District for the next several hours, potentially affecting the Central Coast and Newcastle region, » said the Bureau of Meterology.
