Thanksgiving 2018 happened just four days after Smith was injured. During that time, Smith said that he and his family realized that from that point on everything would be different. When he looks back on everything he’s been through and on his long walk back to the football field, he is grateful and says there should be more than one day a year when he can say thank you.
« There are so many things we take for granted in our lives, » said Smith. “We should work more than one day a year and realize how lucky we are for so many things. ”
Smith said he felt like he was getting his second chance and his start on Thursday gave the day a new meaning.
As part of his rehab, Smith received special permission to go to the Intrepid Center, the Military Rehabilitation Center. At this point, he called his injury day his « life day ». This is what members of the military call the day they survived a traumatic injury. It wasn’t until he started rehab at the Center for the Intrepid that he even thought football could be part of his future and really realized what « survival » could be for him.
By then, Smith said he was the lowest. He had gone through numerous surgeries and survived a life-threatening infection, and he didn’t know what his life would be like. He didn’t know if he would ever walk normally again or play with his children. Football wasn’t even on the table. His first visit to the Intrepid Center changed all that.
« My first trip to the Intrepid Center was the first time they put a soccer ball in my hands and made me okay to even think about it, » said Smith. « I couldn’t even run and they made me start throwing and I remember how therapeutic it was to get a ball and throw again. It really energized me. ”
Smith has returned from a devastating injury and started again in the NFL and that couldn’t be the end of his story. Washington Smith plans to return in 2021, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Smith, who would make $ 19 million in 2021, wasn’t particularly spectacular, but he’s a perfect option for Washington as they are looking for a franchise quarterback and waiting for Kyle Allen, who sustained an ankle injury earlier this season. recover. Smith has lost 55 of 80 for 556 yards with a touchdown and an interception in four games this season.
