World News – AU – The grown-ups get their new name for the Tassie team

The greats of Australian basketball, including Andrew Bogut, have destroyed the name given to the new Tasmanian team which is expected to enter the NBL for the 2021-22 season

NBL: The NBL has still not ruled out the possibility of a hub in New Zealand to start the season on time

NBL big names have questioned the league’s impending decision to name new Tasmanian team the Jack Jumpers for the state’s return to competition in the 2021-2022 season

Chris Anstey and Andrew Bogut hit via Twitter after it emerged on Wednesday that Jack Jumpers, a poisonous ant species native to Australia and most commonly found in Tasmania, had pushed back the popular choice of Tridents

It is understood that the NBL will make an official announcement on Thursday, concluding a search a month after nominating five finalists

Tridents was expected to receive the last nod after garnering a lot of support from the Tasmanian basketball community, but it looks like Jack Jumpers will be the last name standing

This decision was shocked, led by Chris Anstey, three-time NBL champion, who took to Twitter to express his frustration

« NBL takes a big step backwards in Tasmania, then calls them the Jack Jumpers? » said Anstey

The @NBL takes a big step backwards in Tasmania, then calls them the Jack Jumpers? My God 🤦🏻‍♂️

The NBL said in a statement that it received nearly 10,000 registrations of names suggested by members of the Tasmanian public before making the final call

However, fans have also expressed their displeasure over Jack Jumpers’ victory as the name of Tasmania’s new squad.

One fan said: « So a national league finally creates a team in Tasmania and then they call them the ‘Sensational Jack Jumpers It couldn’t be a worse name’

Although most basketball fans disagree with Jack Jumpers, the name has received fan support

« It’s quite fitting – these Jack Jumpers are tough, tenacious little buggers that pack a punch. I remember them well from my years in Hobart »
