World News – AU – The prison guard used a computer to sniff out inmates

. .

A former Brisbane jailer who illegally accessed a compromised computer system that contained confidential information about inmates 69 times was fined.

Brisbane Magistrates Court heard he was a security guard at the Wolston Correctional Center when the Crime and Corruption Commission opened an investigation into the prison in 2017.

The CCC found that Newman carried out 69 unlawful checks of the internal computer system between March and July 2017. He was later suspended.

« (The checks) had no connection with the Wolston Correctional Center . . . and they had nothing to do with his job description, particularly controls on women, « he said.

Newman was charged in 2019 after refusing to attend a formal interview with the CCC.

Newman’s attorney Brendan Beavon said his client told him that inappropriately accessing the computer system was a « systemic problem » within Corrective Services.

Magistrate Bronwyn Springer said Newman had violated the trust placed in him, but there was nothing to suggest that the information had been shared with others.

« I accept that prison work is difficult and stressful, but that is no excuse for doing what you did, » she said.

Otherwise Newman is of good character. Ms. Springer fined him $ 3,500 but did not record a conviction.
