The Federal Supreme Court ruling on the Bob Brown Foundation’s Great Forest case is deeply disappointing to Tasmania’s forests and threatened species.
It’s a setback, but the ruling won’t stop those who are determined to make this pointless one to end state-sanctioned destruction.
In a climate and biodiversity emergency, threatened species such as the fast parrot are already under great pressure. The Labor-backed intensification of the deforestation of indigenous forests by the Liberals is bringing them closer to extinction.
It is clear that our federal environmental laws are too weak to protect threatened and endangered species. Today’s decision does not give the Liberals or the Tasmanian forestry a passport. Science is science. The habitat destruction caused by deforestation has reduced the Swift Parrot to an estimated 300 solitary birds.
Any government that really wanted to protect endangered species or take the climate seriously would already be working to end the deforestation of native forests. Instead, the Liberals are adopting cynical, dishonest policies at enormous cost to the environment.
We salute the Bob Brown Foundation Forest Defenders for fighting so hard to protect the forests and creatures that they sustain Protect.
BBF may not have won today, but if anything, that decision will only build the resolve, courage and strength of the conservation movement.
The Greens are proud to be alongside the Bob Brown Foundation and the The vast majority of Tasmanians who want the island’s wild, carbon-rich forests to be protected from madness.
