Te Akau Racing’s challenge for dominance in the Hilton Karaka Million 2YO’s $ 1M DoubleTree earlier this month was reinforced on Sunday in Ellerslie when On The Bubbles scored an all-out victory. This is his final preparation for the great event.

The Brazen Beau youngster, trained by Jamie Richards, sat far three times during the 1200 meter competition, but still found plenty of kick at home to take a comfortable two and a half long win.

When Richards won first at Awapuni last month, he was keen to have his protégé look around the Ellerslie circuit before his main assignment on January 23rd.

« He was very impressive today as we wanted to take him off the pace and teach him not to be that one-dimensional, » said Richards.

« He was back at a moderate pace and wanted to overdo it, three Time without cover, but he traveled well and put her away well.

« He’s a horse that has continued to improve. The biggest help was when we made him gelding.

“I just got the feeling that he has more to offer with the way he tries and with his attitude, and now it’s all starting to come together.

“He had tested in Ellerslie, but I had to choose whether to lead him today or send him to the Matamata trial on Tuesday.

« He’s such a tough horse and in good shape that I thought it would be best for him to have a good look at the Ellerslie course. »

On The Bubbles, a $ 90,000 purchase by David Ellis CNZM of the Leanach Lodge design during the Book 1 sale in Karaka last year, tackling the Karaka Million will now be easy.

« Johnathan Parkes came to ride him today and is slated to keep the ride for the Karaka Million. »

Richards had expected to have two runners in today’s event but withdrew the Iffraaj filly Millefiori on race morning with elevated temperatures. She’s now likely to run into Tauranga next Friday to prepare for her shot for the Karaka Million, a path Richards took with last year’s winner, Cool Aza Beel.

With Te Akau Racing expected to have five runners in the Karaka Million 2YO, Richards is in search of drivers after Opie Bosson, the number one stable jockey, on appeal against a negligent charge brought on New Years Day that will miss him , the Karaka Million Race Meeting was unsuccessful.

Bookies were quick to respond to the win by installing On The Bubbles as the new favorite for the Karaka Million 2YO with $ 4.40 fixed odds. Colleagues Millefiori and Sneaky Shark now cost $ 5 and another runner trained by Richards in Avonallo was $ 8.50.
