MONTREAL â ???? Whether the weeks before or after the election appear longer is a question best left to historians and philosophers.

What is certain today is that we are living in remarkably dangerous times in the United States, and there is perhaps no better example of this than the events of Tuesday in Georgia.

Here two runoff elections determine the Georgia Senators and the balance of power in the Senate.

It is also one of the states where the Trump campaign is contesting the result of the presidential election.

Tuesday, this powerful video from Gabriel Sterling, Georgia’s Voting Systems Manager. a registered republican? quickly became known.

In the video, Sterling was holding a press conference calling on President Trump and his supporters to stop harassment and threats of violence and death against election workers and officials in Georgia.

As one of the top officials in the electoral structure in Georgia, Sterling stated in no uncertain terms that the actions of President Trump and his supporters would result in people being killed.

He added that those who use their voice and position to attack Georgia’s electoral system are implicated in the numerous threats against election officials, including the well-known death threats against Georgian Foreign Minister Brad Raffensperger and his family, he said.

A passionate Sterling said, « It has all gone too far . . . Mr.. . Mr President, you have not condemned this language or these actions. Senators, you have not condemned this language or these actions. â ????

Because the type of violent speech we see in Georgia is not protected by the first change.

The first change is one of the most important changes in protecting American democracy.

With the first amendment to protect freedom of expression, our opinions can be publicly expressed and published, as mine are here today, without the government being able to stop them.

But in the landmark case of Brandenburg v. The Ohio Supreme Court ruled that a speech advocating illegal behavior is protected by the first amendment unless the speech is likely to result in impending lawlessness. â ????

While the Supreme Court wanted to clarify in cases after Brandenburg that vague threats of violence were protected by the first amendment, this is not the case in Georgia.

It’s not just Georgian Foreign Minister Brad Raffensperger and his family who have received death threats. In his viral speech, Sterling clarified that a 20-year-old employee of an election company had received death threats and on the subject of distributing a noose picture online saying he should be killed? â € œHang up for treason. â ????

This is really a textbook case as to why America has a first amendment and exactly the type and scope of speech that this powerful constitutional amendment should not protect.

The protection of the First Amendment begins with the aim of preserving democracy and ends exactly where we are in Georgia.

The fact that we have to deal with such a bizarre question in the first place should give us a break.

We live in a time when a significant percentage of voters are calling for the First Amendment to be expanded.

They argue that private actors like Twitter and Facebook exercise government-like control over online communication and online forums and are therefore analogous to state actors and should not be able to restrict the language.

Their voices are heard by law scholars like David L. repeated. Hudson jr. , who writes in the American Bar Association’s Human Rights Magazine, argues that individual self-actualization is often linked to freedom theory? assumes that humans need and long for the ability to express themselves in order to become fully functional individuals.

Yet events in Georgia this week put the nation on a political, legal, and arguably moral slippery slope from which recovery is slow and determined.

Looking at the current ideologically conservative Supreme Court can be just as purposeful. So the answer may lie in legislation and other constitutional amendments to protect the people and their voices threatened by the current views of our First Amendment.
