The masked singer said goodbye to broccoli in his special Thanksgiving episode and revealed the rock’n’roll legend Paul Anka behind the green vegetable mask. The 79-year-old said he was grateful for his time on the hit reality show as it was the perfect creative medium for him as he recorded his latest album during the COVID-19 pandemic.
« I was really locked in a studio and obviously hadn’t socialized or got out with COVID-19, » he told Variety after his exposure. « After talking to my son and girlfriend and some of the staff, I said, yes, I have to get out of here and I think it would be great fun. «
Anka’s big reveal came as a surprise to the audience and the judges, as Robin Thicke was the only panelist who correctly guessed his identity. Thicke attributed Brocooli’s identity to his Canadian heritage. « It’s a pretty close community, » Anka said of Canadians in the entertainment industry. « There was a great variety of people from Bill Murray to Wayne Newton. I suspected Robin would find out because I wasn’t changing my voice that much other than moving around a lot. I don’t really suspect that a lot of the people watching or even on the panel have ever seen me in person, except maybe Robin. «
Among the other panelists, Nicole Scherzinger suspected Wayne Newton, Ken Jeong Ringo Starr, Jenny McCarthy Neil Sedaka and guest speaker Jay Pharoah suspected that it could be Paul Simon. Thick was certain that Broccoli’s mention of « The Big Cheese » in his hint packet was a reference to Frank Sinatra when Anka wrote Sinatra’s hit « My Way ». «
As Broccoli, Anka sang « Old Time Rock & Roll » by Bob Seger &, the Silver Bullet Band; « House Is Rockin ‘/ Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On » by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jerry Lee Lewis; and « Hello » by Lionel Richie. « That was the point to have fun and exercise, » he said of his uptempo songs. « By putting in the energy and songs that I don’t normally do, I felt like it might throw them up a bit. «
But why the broccoli costume? Anka said he chose it because it is a « healthy nut ». « I’ve been in the flow, I don’t exist with expectations, most things in life, » he said. « So I just went along with it. I think I went further than I honestly thought. I wasn’t really ready to wear a costume for three weeks, but these costumes are amazing. I think the big challenge for a lot of fans is that these costumes are amazing. «
A common point of criticism among Masked Singer participants is the bulky and hot costumes. Anka was no exception and said it took some getting used to. « I’m an old school guy in the sense that there are no tricks, » he said. « I have no ears and I work in a certain way. And I’m from the Rat Pack group and we had a certain execution when we sing. But once you put on a suit, it doesn’t really fit normal, and then the heat and then the picture is very difficult because of the screen. And then you have a hand five times the size of yours. But once you get through the first [performance] and the severity of it all, then just get into it, you reach out and do it. «
Anka was just the newest big name to bow to The Masked Singer. Previously exposed celebrities were Lonzo Ball (Whatchamacallit), “Dr. . Elvis ”Francois (Snake), Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black (Snowy Owls), Bob Saget (Curly Monster), Wendy Williams (Lips), Mark Sanchez (Baby Alien), Brian Austin Green (Giraffe), Mickey Rourke (Gremlin) and Busta Rhymes (Dragon). On the way to the last six are crocodile, mushroom, jellyfish, popcorn, sun and seahorse. The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on Fox. m. ET.
