Joe Johns said it was the second time he’s been interrupted by a raccoon in two weeks

A CNN reporter fended off a raccoon moments before going live to broadcast the news

Joe Johns, CNN’s senior White House correspondent, kept his cool despite the sudden interruption of one of the mammals

Referring to the incident – images some of his colleagues shared online – on Twitter, Johns assured people that « no animals were harmed » as he hunted the raccoon

« So this is the second time in two weeks that a raccoon has shown up shortly after @NewDay opens, » Johns said « I think they are drawn to the lights. ‘got hurt I threw something to scare him #CrazyOuttakes « 

New Day presenter Alisyn Camerota shared a video of the moment on Twitter, writing: « This is what an accomplished professional is @joejohnscnn Seconds before his live hit @NewDay he fends off an attack of raccoon! Just another day in the cycle of new hazelnuts #behindthescenes #whitehouseraccoon #wildlife « 

In the footage, Johns looks behind his shoulder after it appears someone off camera showed him the raccoon.The reporter then yells at the raccoon to get him out of the area before throwing something in his direction

The animal fled just in time for the reporter to turn around and start shooting live

Johns told CNN on Wednesday that this was not the first time an animal joined his newscast Last week, the same raccoon shortly before his live shot for New Day

« What would you do? I panicked, » Johns said, « It was 20 seconds before the broadcast and I start yelling at it, ‘Get out of here!' »

“So this is the second time the raccoon has returned to the top of New Day,” said Johns “Who knows why, but I think it’s the light that attracts animals, and you add to that – the fact that the White House campus is now devoid of people and the animals ran from the house «
