As day two of the 2020 NHL Draft began, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators traded
Matt Murray heads to the Senators in exchange for forward Jonathan Gruden and this year’s 52nd draft pick
« We would like to thank Matt for all he has done in his five seasons with the Penguins, » said Jim Rutherford, general manager of the Penguins. « He’s been instrumental in our back-to-back Stanley Cup championships, and we wish him the best »
After back-to-back titles Murray faced injury issues and then the arrival of Tristan Jarry last season where he lost his grip on the No 1 job With Jarry and Murray limited to free agents this offseason, Rutherford made his goaltender decision when he re-signed Jarry last week at $ 10 over three years5M offer that has put Murray in the crowded goalie market with many teams looking for help in this specific area of their roster.
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Thank you, Pittsburgh for these amazing years I cherished every opportunity I had to get on the ice in a Penguins jersey I learned so many valuable lessons, developed so many good friendships and had a really great time Thank you to the City of Pittsburgh, the team management and property staff, Jim Rutherford, Mike Sullivan, Mike Buckley, all assistant coaches, training and equipment staff, the public relations staff and everyone in the organization Most importantly to all my teammates thank you for your friendship, your insights and for always being at my back It means the world to me I am truly grateful for every opportunity 🙏 🏻🙏🏻
Murray’s addition would help the Senators at the net after deciding not to re-sign Craig Anderson and Anders Nilsson, still struggling with a concussion suffered almost two years ago
“The acquisition of Matt Murray is an important addition to our lineup,” said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion. “He’s a proven goaltender with considerable experience in high pressure and someone who we are sure will serve as an exceptional mentor to our young group of future goalkeepers »
Trading is just the first part for Dorion Murray, 26, is a restricted free agent and has arbitration rights if an extension cannot be worked out
