This announcement was part of a series of new measures announced by Regional Health Officer Dr.. Bonnie Henry Thursday (Nov.. 18) Follow-up of standard cases and deaths b. C. in the last days.
Many retailers and companies have expressed their frustration with past iterations that amounted to recommendations and expectations to the public, but left it to individual companies to sort through the details and enforcement.. Henry said the new mandate will give companies support for the government in enforcing mask rules.
Masks will be required for both customers and employees at indoor retail locations and public spaces across the province, except when eating or drinking in a designated food service area. It will also be mandatory in workplaces and hotels in public areas such as hallways and elevators, but not in schools.
On why schools were excluded from Thursday’s rules on wearing masks, Henry said that « they are not public open spaces. Masks are mandatory in high traffic areas inside middle and high schools.
She said, « We don’t expect children to wear masks while sitting at their desks all day long. ». Older students in Ontario and some Quebec schools are required to wear masks while in their classes.
