Ontario has taken a dark step forward as the province records the highest daily number of COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic

Health officials reported 700 new infections on Monday, surpassing the previous record of 624 cases on April 24

One death from COVID-19 has been recorded in the last 24 hours and 331 cases of the disease are now considered resolved by the province

Monday’s report brings the total number of infections in Ontario to 50,531, including 2,840 deaths and 43,127 recoveries

Almost half (317) of the new cases reported on Monday are in people between the ages of 20 and 39 This age group accounts for the most laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ontario, or 17,317

183 cases have been recorded in people aged 40 to 59, while 101 new infections have been reported in people 19 and under

Eighty-seven new cases are in people aged 60 to 79 and 15 new cases have been documented in people aged 80 and over

Peel Region also saw triple-digit new cases with 104 new infections 89 more cases were reported in Ottawa and 56 cases in York Region Four other public health units are also reporting double-digit new cases

Meanwhile, several regions are reporting fewer than five new cases, with some reporting no new cases at all

There are 128 people in one Ontario hospital being treated for symptoms of COVID-19, although about 40 hospitals have not reported patient data

Of these 128 patients, 29 are treated in an intensive care unit, 17 of whom breathe using a ventilator

So far 3,849,337 tests have been processed across the province since the start of the pandemic

There are currently 49,586 tests under investigation, a significant drop from the backlog of 65,061 reported on Sunday

Daily screening for the disease in Ontario has increased dramatically in recent months As of April 24, 12,295 tests were performed in a 24-hour period
