The escort that accompanies Provincial Const. Marc Hovingh will be leaving Toronto at noon this afternoon and is on his way back to Manitoulin Island. For those who want to pay their respects, live updates will be made available in the Twitter feed @OPP_News.

The escort follows Highway 400 to Highway 69, then Highway 17, and finally Highway 6 on Manitoulin.

« PC Marc Hovingh is being brought back to Mindemoya from Toronto after an autopsy, » tweeted OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique. « Everyone is invited to pay their respects on the track. Please ensure standard COVID-19 precautions for your area are followed as we honor our fallen hero. «

Little Current Mayor Al MacNevin said in a press release Monday that the flag is flying at half mast over the Little Current post office in Hovingh’s honor.

« As he is brought back to Manitoulin Island today, we mourn the loss of a trusted and valued community member with the rest of the island, » said MacNevin. « We offer our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues, and hope that they will find solace in the positive memories they share. «

« As we try to honor those who have fallen, we must not forget those who have stayed behind, » he continued. « As a community we want to reach out to those who mourn and let them know that we are with them. «

MacNevin said he and the city council would be looking for an opportunity to officially pay tribute to Hovingh.

« It is our sincere hope that we will find a means of paying tribute that truly reflects the honor and dignity with which he has served our community, » he said.

Hovingh was killed Thursday when he and another official responded to a call from an owner near Gore Bay after the owner reported the presence of an unwanted man.

Gary Brohman, 60, from Gore Bay was also killed. The Ontario Special Investigations Unit is investigating Brohman’s death, while the Greater Sudbury Police Service is investigating Hovingh’s death.
