Ontario Hospital Lobby Leader Calls For Niagara MLA To Be Punished After Being Pictured In A Banquet Hall Standing Side By Side With Dozens Of Other Unmasked People

Sam Oosterhoff posted several images of himself posing with around 40 other people in an unnamed banquet hall over the weekend

In the now deleted photos, Oosterhoff, who is Parliamentary Assistant to Education Minister Stephen Lecce, is tight with other people for several group photos

The photo prompted Ontario Hospital Association president Anthony Dale, who is already a vocal critic of the Ford government’s handling of the second fall wave, to tweet that Oosterhoff is set to lose his post parliamentary secretary accordingly

In response, Oosterhoff’s office told CP24 that the banquet hall was following distancing rules, but he should have worn a mask when regrouping with others for a photo

“It was an event in a staffed banquet hall, with less than 50 people, including 5 remote tables and limited to less than ten people each,” he told CP24 “However, I should have wear a mask when we took a quick pic, given how close everyone is, and I apologize for not doing so »

In all fairness @samoosterhoff should step down as PA of @Sflecce How many healthcare workers gathered for a party this weekend with 40 other people inside? “MP Oosterhoff says he’s sorry and should have worn a mask” https: // tco / LoxpzT9IjB #onhealth #onpoli

Speaking on Monday afternoon, Premier Doug Ford said Oosterhoff would not be demoted or face any other penalties for the photo

« He is an excellent representative, I am proud to have him on the team and he will continue to be (the parliamentary assistant) to the Minister, » said Ford « He’s doing a great job »

The photo became fodder in Question Period on Monday, as NDP Leader Andrea Horwath quizzed the Prime Minister about the photo

“This weekend two government MPs wrote the first warning that people might start ignoring public health advice and the member for Niagara West, as we’ve all seen, literally posed for a photo where he violated public health guidelines with over 40 of his friends and family So why is the Prime Minister’s own team challenging and ignoring his instructions? « She asked

Government House Leader Paul Calandra responded that he and Ford spoke to Oosterhoff and accepted his apology

The Niagara region has seen a greater number of infections in recent days, but remains one of 29 regions where banquet halls are permitted to operate, provided physical distancing and hygiene guidelines are followed. and that 50 people are not present

The region had 112 active cases of novel coronavirus infection on Sunday evening, with 68 deaths and three people hospitalized under treatment
