World News – CA – TAIT: A Gray Cup Victory Party in Edmonton

. .

Raise your hand if you’ve been either a guest or a host in the following scenario.

You have a glove half a second into a residence for the annual Gray Cup party when you hear a voice with an urgent tone out of nowhere.

« Get your 50/50 tickets before they run out, » you hear. “Nobody is allowed in here unless you buy a 50/50 ticket. ”

Absolutely – 50/50 tickets and Gray Cup parties go together like chips and dip, meat and cheese, punch and cold beer and so many other festive November nuances that boldly celebrate the coronation of the Canadian professional football champions.

Then the COVD-19 clutch interfered … well, everything. The Canadian Football League has canceled its season and that means the Gray Cup festivals and their fun shanigans have also been put on hold.

But the unnamed Edmonton Football Team announced an event that will magically bring together a Gray Cup tradition, raise funds for a remarkable cause, and, perhaps the greatest aspect of that story, honor and celebrate Joey Moss.

Edmonton – and much of North America – was broken in early October when Moss passed away at the age of 57.

He was a hero and pioneer, not only because he lived with Down syndrome, but also because of his personality, which was driven by hard work and respect for others. Moss was a character too, and could return any type of barb with a razor-sharp answer.

Sure, he earned celebrity status for being employed by the Edmonton Oilers and the football team. But again, it was his personality and most infectious spirit that made him loved by so many.

Edmonton Football Team must be credited and greeted for their initiative in the 50/50 raffle. The event also somewhat fills the void created by the fact that there are no Gray Cup parties on Sunday.

It will raise funds for the Winnifred Stewart Association, a group that supports Moss. In many ways, the steady hand and support of the group played a key role in the development of Moss and ultimately in its outstanding success.

Marty Forbes, retired radio manager and gigantic community leader, took to Twitter and predicted that six-digit numbers is a goal we can all challenge ourselves to.

And then I think of my longtime friend Stu Jeffries, who was on Edmonton radio in the late 1980s.

Now in Toronto, he’s running three contests during his morning show for the Children’s Wish Foundation. Most of the time, the listeners give everything they gain back to the desire to have children.

It’s wonderful that the 2020 Edmonton Gray Cup is going to be a monumental success … without a single failure of football.
