The Quinnipiac Bobcats (5-7, 3-5 MAAC), at their 74th pace set in the country, are hosting the Canisius Golden Griffins (3-3, 3-3 MAAC) on Friday, February 12 at 1 p.m. ET at the TD Bank Sports Center.

This bias towards the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference should be interesting for at least one reason: The two teams combined only finished 18 in this coronavirus-affected campaign Games disputed. Only three teams across the nation have played fewer games than the Griffs. American and Howard have only played four games and New Mexico State has logged five.

Meanwhile, Quinnipiac keeps the teams on an effective field goal percentage of only 42.5% on the defensive – good for the third-best in the NCAA.

The last time we saw the Griffs play a game, head coach Reggie Witherspoon’s team completed the end of a St. Peter’s home game in two games over the New Year’s weekend. Junior Guard Ahamadou Fofana exploded in the second half, scoring all of his strong 17 points to secure the win.

Since then, Blue and Gold have been completely off because of the widespread COVID problems that have devastated numerous MAAC programs Radar gone. Canisius’ current break is the third longest active stretch without a game, just behind Howard and conference colleague Iona. How the out-of-game time will affect the grips remains to be seen.

In the last pictures we saw, Fofana’s aggressive actions against the Peacocks – and his ability to foul – were almost seven weeks ago Difference. Seven of 17 points came off the free-throw line in the last 36 seconds of the game. If Fofana takes this approach again, the Bobcats will have their hands full.

Quinnipiac loses 77-70 to Fairfield, where Baker Dunleavy’s squad showed an odd shooting performance. The cats were on fire from the outside, going from the three-point range to 12 out of 24 (50%). However, Quinnipiac only managed a 9-out-of-29 (31%) attempt on two-point field goals. That inequality proved to be too big when trying to win a third straight game after losing four straight.

First year wing, Tymu Chenery, scored on the seven point loss a career high of 21 points for the Bobcats and was a big part of the rampage as he went 6-7 from a distance. The team’s top scorer, Senior Jacob Rigoni, added 17 points.

Quinnipiac is rated lower overall by KenPom (# 269) than Canisius (# 238) overall – but, as noted above, it’s one of the elite -Defensive units in the nation when it comes to firing attacks on opponents. The Bobcats are rated # 6 when it comes to defending two-point shots at 42.6% and No. 12 when defending three-point shots at 28.5%.

This ability to take out the opponent wins in the face the long discharge of the Griffs in importance. If early shots don’t go off, will Canisius get frustrated and throw in the towel?

If the Quinnipiac head coach’s last name sounds familiar, it should be. Fourth year head coach Baker Dunleavy is the son of longtime NBA head coach Mike Dunleavy. But Baker has achieved some things on the sidelines himself. The 38-year-old was part of Jay Wright’s Villanova staff when the Wildcats won the 2016 NCAA tournament.

@JacobRigoni has been an incredible leader in our program for the past 4 years. Happy for him – much more! https://t.co/YRcOcNRWkW

The « Nova Alaun » gave their Aussie import a shout-out on social media a few weeks ago. It is this kind of connection with the players in the program that allows them to buy-in.

The Bobcats have done a little worse this season so far. The « Cats » were selected to finish seventh in the league in the MAAC pre-season poll and are currently eighth in the conference rankings. Canisius has developed above average despite the lack of games. The blue and gold were picked to finish 10th but currently rank sixth.

But despite ratings and tables, I love the home team at this location. KenPom predicts Quinnipiac will win 69-68. I think the Bobcats win by more than a point and can easily hold their own against a rusty Canisius group.
