The former sports car powerhouse team Champion Racing will return after a 13-year hiatus to take part in this year’s 99th round of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
The team will drive a Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport in of the Time Attack 1 division with current Pikes Peak record holder Romain Dumas at the wheel. The Frenchman was the first driver to break the 8-minute mark on the 12.42-mile route in 2018 when driving the electric Volkswagen I.D. R.
Champion’s previous racing activities started with Porsches in the 1990s. He then changed brands and dominated ALMS as the North American Audi works team (main picture). In addition to an overall victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2005 with an Audi R8 from Tom Kristensen, JJ Lehto and Marc Werner, the team’s successes include a victory in the Le Mans class and victories at the Sebring and Petit Le Mans 12 Hours. This program ended in 2008 – the same year that the team won a third ALMS title in a row under the banner of Audi Sport North America.
