The organizers of the Eurovision Song Contest say that the event will not take place « as usual » this year, but has committed to holding an event from May 18th from May 22nd.
After a Press conference today it turned out that the most viable option seems to be a socially distant event. Your ultimate goal is to get all 41 participants to perform in the Dutch city of Rotterdam.
« Despite the pandemic, the Eurovision Song Contest will definitely be welcome again in May, but under the circumstances it is unfortunately impossible to Hold the event as we are used to, « said Martin Österdahl, competition director.
He said that the health and safety of all participants is a top priority and the organizers are working with the European Broadcasting Union and the Dutch broadcasters as well as the city of Rotterdam to finalize the best plan.
“We very much hope that we can meet in Rotterdam in May and will do everything in the coming weeks to achieve this. In a constantly changing situation, we take the time to ensure that we can host the Eurovision Song Contest in the best possible and safe way, ”said Österdahl.
Singer Lesley Roy has already been selected as Ireland’s participant for the annual showdown. She was supposed to perform her song Story of My Life in the Netherlands last year, but instead a “song celebration” took place.
The organizers of the competition are now examining three possible scenarios that were worked out last autumn to support the competition under the current circumstances.
Sietse Bakker, Executive Producer of Host Broadcasters, said that ideally they hope that each participant can physically perform in Rotterdam this May.
« By doing as long as We want to stay flexible if possible, if the circumstances allow us to organize the best possible Eurovision Song Contest. Our main goal is to bring the 41 artists to Rotterdam, all perform on the same stage and welcome journalists to report on the competition, ”he said.
In this best-case scenario, a protocol is used to protect Artists, delegations and crews on-site and off-site developed and adhered to at all times, which includes frequent Covid-19 tests.
For participants who cannot travel to Rotterdam, they can use a recorded performance as a contribution. For those who can travel, they can play their songs live on stage.
The events are held either without an audience or with a reduced audience to allow social distancing, depending on local government guidelines. </ The second option that is being examined is that only the organizers and interval participants are the only ones present in the Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam. All acts use a recorded performance for their entry or "live-on-tape".
In the third scenario, in the event of a suspension, the Eurovision is performed without an audience and everything is performed virtually.
