Australian cyclist Jai Hindley took the lead of the general of the Giro d’Italia on the penultimate day

The 24-year-old is less than a second ahead of stage 20 winner Tao Geoghegan Hart, preparing the race for a mind-blowing final on Sunday

Hindley finished just behind Geoghegan Hart on Saturday, but he leads the Briton by 086 seconds overall before the final time trial, which should favor the Ineos-Grenadiers driver

The Sunweb rider took the Maglia Rosa leader’s jersey from his teammate Wilco Kelderman, who finished 1h35 behind and is now 1h32 behind

‘From an early age I dreamed of wearing the Maglia Rosa, it’s a huge honor for me, I still can’t believe it

Portuguese driver Joao Almeida attacked in the chasing group which included Kelderman and two-time champion Vincenzo Nibali in the final to finish the stage in fourth place

The stage was supposed to go through the punitive Col d’Agnel and Col d’Izoard in France, but restrictions due to the COVID-19 crisis forced the organizers to change the route and make the Sestriere peloton climb twice

Kelderman and most of the big guns were dropped on the first ascent to the ski resort as Dennis accelerated, taking Geoghegan Hart and Hindley in his wake

The Dutchman was hovering 40 seconds behind at the top and lost even more time on the last climb, where Hindley attacked several times but failed to drop Geoghegan Hart

If Hindley can maintain his lead in tomorrow’s 15 7km time trial from Cernusco sul Naviglio in Milan, he will become the first Australian to win the race

This is the first time in history that a Grand Tour event has less than a second separating first and second place before the last stage
