Bristol reached its first European final with an emotional fight to beat Challenge Cup opponents Bordeaux-Begles 37-20 after extra time at Ashton Gate

The western country club overcame a 13-point deficit and yellow card for center star Semi Radradra against his former club to reach next month’s final, when they face Toulon or Leicester

But they needed another 20 minutes to pass, with substitute center Piers O’Conor and full-back Max Malins scoring early in the first overtime and breaking down Bordeaux’s resistance after finishing 20-20 in 80 minutes

Captain Steven Luatua and Malins made touchdowns during normal time, while fly-half Callum Sheedy converted all four touchdowns and threw three penalties for a 17-point run

But Bristol, which played in a major final over 30 years ago during the knockout cup days of England rugby, struggled for long stretches against a Bordeaux inspired by Matthieu Jalibert

Jalibert scored a try and threw two penalties, and there was also a try for hooker Joseph Dweba, with Maxime Lucu and Ben Botica each adding a conversion

Bristol center Siale Piutau returned after a three-match ban, but his brother Charles was sidelined by an Achilles injury, so Malins replaced the number 15 jersey and winger Alapati Leiua replaced Henry Purdy, victim of a thigh injury

Bordeaux included winger Ben Lam, nephew of Bristol rugby manager Pat Lam, while Lucu, mainstay Ben Tameifuna and flanker Cameron Woki were called up following the weekend’s quarter-final victory. last end in Edinburgh

The visitors enjoyed a dominant opening and took a well-deserved lead as Bristol struggled to harness their power and pace

Bordeaux skipper Jefferson Poirot was heavily involved in the build-up, and his French international compatriot Jalibert finished impressively, rounding up Malins for a superb try that Lucu converted

Bristol was in dire need of a spark from somewhere, and scrum-half Harry Randall provided it, escaping from a quickly taken penalty, but Bordeaux defenders managed to shoot it before clearing the danger

Both teams were guilty of conceding alarming turnovers, but Bordeaux kept their cool in key areas as Bristol battled for mastery

Bristol fell behind when Jalibert threw in two penalties in three minutes, giving his side a 13-point lead as the Gallagher Premiership play-off contenders continued to look distant second best

But just as Bordeaux seemed able to keep Bristol away for the entire first half, they conceded a try

Leiua moved closer, and when possession was quickly recycled, Radradra cut a decisive attacking line and he sent an unmarked Luatua to score

Sheedy added the conversion, and Bristol was back in the game, although there was still a long way to go, trailing 13-7 in between

The second half started badly for Bristol, with Radradra stuck in a minute for a swing arm tackle, although Jalibert later stopped breastfeeding what appeared to be a calf muscle injury and was replaced by Botica

Bristol showed a lot more dynamism and organization than during the first 40 minutes, and they continued with Radradra still off

Randall’s offensive instincts resurfaced again, and his smart kick in space was picked up by Malins, who landed and Sheedy converted

Bristol was suddenly in the ascendant, and they still pulled it off as the hour approached when Sheedy threw a penalty just inside the Bordeaux half

Another penalty from Sheedy suggested Bristol could retire, but Bordeaux had other ideas as Dwemba passed point blank and Botica converted to tie at 20-20

It set up an exciting conclusion, and Bordeaux fell to 14 men after injuring themselves and using all of their replacements, before extra time signaled

And Bristol stepped up a gear at exactly the right time, marching into the final in exciting ways after what became a survival of the fittest
