The success of Tuesday’s presidential debate depends on two things, Mayor Frank Jackson said on Monday: whether candidates express opinions that enlighten voters and whether protesters outside the hall demonstrate peacefully

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The success of Tuesday’s presidential debate depends on two things, Mayor Frank Jackson said on Monday: whether candidates express opinions that enlighten voters and whether protesters outside the hall demonstrate peacefully

Jackson, speaking at a press conference, said the debate was of historic significance as it offered voters a chance to compare President Donald Trump and his Democratic opponent, the former vice-president. President Joe Biden, side by side

« We have two candidates who are markedly different – in terms of personality, in terms of ideology, in terms of approach to life – and our job is to minimize any distractions that might arise that would not allow people who watch the debate to really understand the essence of the two candidates, « said Jackson

« This is what will demonstrate success: when we have a successful internal debate and a successful security perimeter around it, » he said

The city has been working for the past month and a half with partners – the US Secret Service and the FBI, the Ohio National Guard and police from the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University – to organize security around the event

The Secret Service is the lead agency for security within a perimeter erected around Samson Hall, the debate site located on the Health Education Campus, which is jointly owned by the Cleveland the Clinic and Case Western Reserve University and located on the clinic main campus

Outside of this perimeter, Cleveland Police are the lead agency, monitoring protests to ensure they remain peaceful and patrol neighborhoods. They will be supported by the Ohio National Guard, who will protect property and will help control traffic and crowds

« I assure the citizens of Cleveland that we have taken every precaution to ensure that even as people exercise their First Amendment right to free speech, it will be done in a safe manner and secure, ”said Karrie Howard, Director of Public Safety

« We have a lot of assets in place to look at anything and everything, no matter how small and insignificant it may be, » Williams said

Following a Black Lives Matter protest in downtown on May 30 that turned into riots, Cleveland decided to have more officers

Specific figures were not made public, but officials said last week that they had assigned agents to 12-hour shifts and canceled days off to ensure there were lots of agents to watch the protests while having a full complement to patrol the streets of the neighborhood

« Over time since May 30, there have been multiple protests and protests, all over town, both downtown and in neighborhoods, and in front of my house, » Jackson said. / p>

« All of this has gone well, with regard to the peace and order in which people have expressed their constitutional rights, » he said
