Dubai RTA and Dubai Police have come together to coordinate safe cycling, new cycle lanes and the safe trial of electric scooters across the city

Representatives of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority and Dubai Police gathered for a meeting to discuss the safe operation of electric scooters and improving the safety of cycle lanes

Mohammed Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), met His Excellency Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Mar, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police The meeting was necessary to implement the guidelines on scooters, cycling and a roadside relay project, as led by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai

During the meeting, the CRJ and police representatives discussed the CRJ’s plans to build more cycle lanes to improve the livability of the city and help its migration to sustainable transport The Crown Prince of Dubai is determined to make the city bike-friendly in line with Dubai Vision 2021 – a program of measures to make the city a popular and safe destination for business, life and sightseeing

Dubai’s cycle lanes currently stretch for a total of 425 km Plan is to extend them further to 647 km by 2025 In a statement, RTA says it aims to « facilitate connection to Dubai hot spots with various means of public transport « 

The city is expected to begin testing electric scooters during the week of October 26, 2020 in five areas of the city These are:

RTA claims that these areas were selected based on specific criteria such as population density, private developments, availability of public transport services, integrated infrastructure and road safety records
