World News – GB – Eamonn Holmes backs Marcus Rashford as he criticizes free school meals decision

Eamonn Holmes has revealed his support for Marcus Rashford for his campaign against child poverty in the UK

Speaking to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on Monday morning, TV presenter Eamonn criticized the government, calling them « morally bad » for not supporting the campaign

« It’s a bigger problem, it’s not just about food poverty, child food poverty – which is disgusting, and which is horrible and immoral, » Eamonn began

« This is a government in England that’s behind the curve, it’s doing something in Northern Ireland, it’s doing something in Scotland, it’s doing something in Wales, what a public relations disaster

« Look at the papers today and there it is, Marcus Rashford, the pride of Britain and someone in government in Westminster is really going to have to get up to speed

« I think they really realized that not only was it tactically wrong, it was morally wrong and needed to be fixed, » he added.

« If you are considered to be food poverty in the long term, where does that magical fridge-freezer or that money tree come from on Halloween or Christmas? »

Manchester United footballer Rashford, 22, has pressed the government to continue its free school meals program after already forcing an extension to provide vouchers for 13 million disadvantaged children during the summer vacation

However, last week MPs voted against another extension – which was passed in Scotland and Wales

The defeat sparked widespread scandal and many wondered how they could help children who are at risk of going hungry when schools are closed

Over 1,000 organizations have supported Marcus’ appeal and are offering free meals to underprivileged children during school holidays

Several local authorities, some led by the Tories, have also announced transition plans despite unprecedented funding cuts – shaming the government’s decision not to continue with the program

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who also took on government this week for funding for the lockdown, announced his region is partnering with the cooperative to make 1,000 meal vouchers available young people
