World News – GB – Hamilton hailed as ‘modern day genius’ as Coulthard highlights F1 star heroes

Lewis Hamilton can surpass Michael Schumacher as F1’s most successful driver with his 92nd race victory in Portugal – but he continues to divide opinion among British audiences

David Coulthard is a stunned « genius » Lewis Hamilton is not a national treasure as Brit aims to break more records

The Mercedes star can surpass Michael Schumacher as F1’s most successful driver with his 92nd race victory in Portugal on Sunday afternoon

Another checkered flag would also bring the 35-year-old closer to the German Seven-Driver Championship

And this season, Hamilton has taken on another challenge by becoming a leading voice in the sport’s fight for equality

But despite his remarkable triumphs, the six-time world champion continues to divide the opinion of the British public

And Coulthard called on his compatriots to get behind Hamilton as they did with his predecessors

“He must be seen as a modern day genius,” he said “Lewis goes beyond sports Now we have a generation of people who have taken a stand on what is right and fair

« He has a unique position to help spark discussion and shed light on important things I imagine not only sporting success, but what he continues to do will always make it known publicly

« There are always people who seem to transcend and reflect a nation; Nigel Mansell seemed to have great public support, Michael Schumacher seemed to have great German support in a way that Sebastian Vettel never got and Nico Rosberg didn’t even come close

« So why? Somehow people connect with some and relate to their journey – and not to others; but I don’t know why Hamilton doesn’t have everyone’s support «

Despite his dominance on the track, Hamilton’s critics complain that he has simply reaped the benefits of driving the best cars

The Briton joined Mercedes from McLaren in 2012 and won five of his six titles with the Northamptonshire outfit

But Coulthard added: « I think it’s a combination of factors; one of the main factors is that he is one of the talents of his generation and another factor is that he has the one of the best cars of this era

« But it’s no surprise that the best drivers usually end up with the best cars. Exceptional talent usually ends up in the right package at some point in their careers

Coulthard won 13 Grands Prix in a distinguished 15-year career that included stints at Williams, McLaren and Red Bull

The sympathetic Scotsman, now a Channel 4 expert, has seen many feuds with Schumacher and also faced Hamilton in his final days in the sport

He added: « I have immense respect for Michael and his family We obviously hadn’t seen the same eye on the race track but he was an exceptional racing driver

« What I would say is he was a more controversial character in the way that Ayrton Senna was a controversial character

« Ayrton and Michael found themselves in situations with the governing body race marshals and were sometimes penalized for what they did on the race track

« Lewis is a very uncontroversial pilot He is very seldom at the heart of an incident pointing to someone else

« He might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I think he runs hard and fair. He’s a very instinctive racing driver »
