Throughout his current teammate Alex Albon’s fights this year, Red Bull officials have always supported the British-born Thai driver
But more recently, Dr Helmut Marko admitted that he might need to « look outside of our team » if Albon « doesn’t live up to expectations »
Marko even named Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez specifically, indicating that it would help the team if Verstappen was pushed even harder by the sister car
« If we understand that Verstappen is not being pushed, we need to know what the limit of the car is, » Marko added
In Portugal, Verstappen was initially reluctant to comment on the growing rumor of Hülkenberg, insisting: « It’s not my problem I don’t see the point in answering questions about it »
But he opened up in more detail by sitting down for an interview with Kai Ebel, the charismatic personality of the German channel RTL
« Obviously I can’t say too much, » insisted Verstappen, « but Nico is a great driver
« What he did at the Nürburgring was very good I think he would be a good teammate, but – again – it’s not mine »
Meanwhile, Verstappen said that although Mercedes has now ceased development of its 2020 car, he supports Red Bull’s decision to continue pushing this year.
« I think it’s more important to keep getting to know this year’s car better, because there isn’t much we can do about it for next year and it is extremely important to eliminate the weaknesses « said the Dutchman
« What works for Mercedes doesn’t have to be right for us We will certainly continue and next year we will find out where we are all »
