Labor MP accused of fraud said she would’ vigorously ‘challenge allegations against her

Apsana Begum, MP for Poplar and Limehouse in east London, has been accused of ‘dishonestly failing to disclose information in order to make profit for herself or another, or to ‘exposing another person to a loss’ on three occasions, according to court official

Ms Begum, who won her seat in last year’s general election, said in a statement that she « vigorously contests these malicious and false allegations »

A court official said it was alleged Ms Begum had failed to tell Tower Hamlets council that she « no longer lived under crowded conditions »

« It would be inappropriate for us to comment on specific allegations, but the public can be sure that any concerns are investigated by an experienced team, in accordance with our procedures »

The charges against Ms Begum followed newspaper reports from last year claiming that she was under investigation into whether she had wrongly obtained an apartment on the council

It was reported that she left her husband’s residence and moved into an apartment in her area shortly thereafter

Investigators allegedly tried to establish so quickly how she had climbed to the top of a waiting list of 18,000 people

Ms Begum, who sits on the Commons Education Committee, entered parliament with a majority of 28,904 votes in the 2019 general election, beating five other candidates to win her seat

She notably spoke to Parliament about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on low income families and ethnic minorities in the UK
