World News – GB – Labor MP accused of harassment against woman


Labor MP Claudia Webbe has been accused of harassing a woman, the prosecution said today

Ms Webbe is due to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on November 11 to face one count of harassment

She is accused of committing the offense over a period of almost 20 months between September 1, 2018 and April 26, 2020

The 55-year-old MP has been charged after an evidentiary package was passed to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) by the Metropolitan Police

Jenny Hopkins of the CPS said: ‘The CPS today decided that Claudia Webbe, MP for Leicester East, should be charged with an offense of harassing a woman

« The criminal proceedings against Ms Webbe are now active and she is entitled to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there are no reports, comments or information sharing online that could in any way either prejudice these procedures »

Ms Webbe said she was « innocent of any wrongdoing » and would defend herself « vigorously » in court after being accused of harassment

In a statement she said: « I am innocent of any wrongdoing and look forward to proving it in court. I will vigorously defend myself against these claims »

The MP for Leicester East was elected to Parliament in the December 2019 general election The seat was previously held by veteran Labor Keith Vaz who retired from Parliament following a scandal

She is also a councilor in the London Borough of Islington where she was a cabinet member for energy, environment and transport

Ms Webbe has been a strong supporter of former Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn and was a member of Labor’s ruling National Executive Committee
