BBC Radio Cornwall presenter Laurence Reed told her legion of radio fans this afternoon that he will be leaving the station in two weeks

The hugely popular phone presenter, who has worked for the station for over 30 years, said he was distressed he made the decision to leave

Laurence, 64, is one of several BBC regional journalists and presenters who have agreed to a voluntary dismissal

Speaking to me just before telling her loyal listeners that her last show will be on Friday November 6, Laurence said: “This is probably one of the toughest decisions of my life. always said when the time is right i would know and i just think the time is right

Laurence said he was still not in great shape after a battle with sepsis last year, which almost killed him. This contributed to his decision to withdraw from one of the shows of most successful radio stations not only in the South West but the whole of the UK

« I’m going in the air », Laurence told me « As you know, I had sepsis last year I don’t think I fully recovered, I have to say I didn’t don’t have the same energy levels as before

« I’m still pretty healthy – I want to go back to the gym, cycle and tennis I need to be a little selfish and do things for myself for a few months, but he there are other opportunities out there

« After sepsis it really makes you assess where you are going in life You realize life goes by quickly, but I leave the show in a healthy position »

He added: « I’m 64 – you have to know when to go I don’t want to be like Frank Bruno or Muhammad Ali for that last fight »

Laurence – who lives in Truro – expects her latest show to be emotional

« It’s a big part of my life I was agonizing – I was really agonizing about it I always said I would know when the time was right and I just think the time is right It doesn’t never a good time «

He stressed that there was no disagreement at the BBC and that it was his choice – « They did their best under very difficult circumstances »

Laurence is proud that her decision to leave comes just weeks after her show won the British Medical Journal (BMJ) award for its phone calls on mental health and suicide awareness He describes it as the « Oscars of the medical world »

“I think I achieved as much as I can,” he told me “The show won all the awards, it’s the most watched show on Radio Cornwall, it’s the oldest phone show in the country – I can’t think of another «

The program has grown from 90 minutes 25 years ago to a hugely popular four hour program today, where every topic you can think of is covered by Laurence in her inimitable way Known for being irascible and uncompromising, his show is also humorous and has helped the people of Cornwall for a generation

« It’s exhausting I’m not kidding When you reach my age you say ‘hello, time to slow down a bit' » he added

In her twenties and running a mobile nightclub, Laurence approached three-year-old Radio Cornwall for a job in 1986

He started by traveling to Truro from North Cornwall to answer the phone and open the phone on Sunday morning for £ 5

« They then let me go free with a tape recorder, » said Laurence « They said to go out and do a vox pop about Valentine’s Day and I said » what’s a vox pop? «

« It was a bit messy and ready but it was streamable – it really went from there »

After completing the highly respected Falmouth Postgraduate Journalism course, Laurence got a full time job at Radio Cornwall as a District Journalist, based in Liskeard

He said, « My patch was Saltash, Torpoint, across from Padstow and Bude, and everything else It was a huge patch – two-thirds of the county I had a radio car and one of the first cellphones in Cornwall – I could pretty much slip it between the two seats of the Ford Escort It was a big thing with a huge battery

« I did this for two or three years, then I said to the manager, if there is a chance to present a program, let me know. A week later he said, I want you to follow the tim hubbard program I said, what is this? He said, it’s an artistic program I said, I don’t do art! «

But Laurence remained faithful and the result was … nothing to do with the accomplished professional we know today

« Back then the office was like the Concorde flight office – there were buttons everywhere I didn’t know how to run it The manager said don’t worry we’ll teach you », he added

« Well they taught me on the air while I was live It was a car radio – it was just hideous They said we don’t know if you’re fit to present But then I did the weird evening show, other bobs, and the chance came to introduce the phone, which was much more on my street «

I asked Laurence about her highlights from a quarter of a century of her phone show

« There have been so many – 25 years, five days a week, 50 weeks a year, you get a lot of phone calls

« We had this guy call me as we were about to get into a water shortage He said, » Before, I have a pond at the end of my garden with carp koi, can I have a garden hose and fill it?  »

« I said, I don’t think you can use a garden hose, but what you can do is take a bucket, walk around and fill it that way He said, I don’t can’t do that I said, yes you can He said NO, I can’t do that! I said, YES YOU CAN !!

Laurence told me that the same thing happened a few weeks ago: « 25 years later, I’m still getting caught »

He said: « The other was Gary Johnson who is now director of Torquay United He was accidentally put on the air My producer said we now have Gary on the air who owns a skip company and he’s unhappy I said, Gary, you’re not happy He said, I’m very happy I said, no you’re not ‘Yes’

He said I’m Gary Johnson from Torquay United I said of course you are It was all live, I didn’t know what was going on The producer admitted he put the wrong person on the air These things happen «

Laurence takes great pride in holding people in power to be accountable and being a voice for the ordinary man and woman who may not have the capacity to defend themselves

« This is the person on the street who is on the phone and maybe can’t get their washing machine repaired – these are the little things we can make a difference on

« Never say never – I can appear somewhere on a radio station It’s not the end of me, but it’s time to hand over the baton and there is some really good talent out there » < / p>

He hopes his legacy will be a continuation of a telephone program on the station A BBC spokesperson has confirmed there are no plans to cut the show

Stephanie Marshall, Head of the BBC West and South West, said: “Laurence is a talented presenter, hardworking journalist and tireless champion of Cornwall, who has a unique ability to communicate with listeners He chose to withdraw from the phone show but will always be a friend of the station «
