World News – GB – Motor racing: Verstappen and Stroll collide in turbulent Portuguese practice

(Reuters) – Max Verstappen and Lance Stroll collided in an eventful second practice for the first Portuguese Grand Prix in 24 years on Friday as Valtteri Bottas set the tone for the Formula champions 1 Mercedes

The afternoon saw two red flag interruptions, first when Pierre Gasly of AlphaTauri pulled up with his car on fire, then when Red Bull’s Verstappen and Racing Point’s Stroll crashed

There was a lot of swearing from Verstappen on the team’s radio after the collision – a rarity in practice when nothing is at stake – as he tried to get inside , suggesting that Stroll was blind

« I was so surprised he just surrendered as I approached him I don’t know where I should go, » said the Dutchman, who refused to apologize for his tongue

« The drivers agreed during the hearing that the incident was the result of a misunderstanding between them and that in hindsight the two could have helped to avoid the incident, » the stewards said in a statement

Verstappen still finished the day in second, half a second slower than Bottas, with six-time Mercedes Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton second in the morning and then eighth after lunch

“The ripples are amazing and there are a lot of places you just can’t see where you are going,” Hamilton said of an Algarve circuit making its F1 debut. p>

« So very difficult and the surface is very smooth and you see a lot of people making mistakes and sliding and turning So it hasn’t been an easy day today has been tough »

McLaren’s Lando Norris finished third in the afternoon, ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who had the latest Ferrari update on his car

Bottas was the fastest in the morning and afternoon, keeping his habit of leading the way on Friday, with an overall best time of one minute 17,940 seconds around the track near Portimao

For the eighth race in a row, including the Nürburgring where testing only started on Saturday due to bad weather, Bottas’s name was at the top of the opening timesheets

« It reminded me a lot of the first time we went to Sochi, or Austin, for the first time with the new Tarmac and it is evolving quite a bit turn by turn

« With red flags in the second practice session, there wasn’t a lot of racing so we still expect a pretty big increase in grip for tomorrow »

Bottas has yet to translate his Friday prowess into corresponding Sunday success, the Finn 69 points behind Hamilton after 11 races

Hamilton has seven wins to two for Bottas and will take a record 92nd career win on Sunday, after tying Michael Schumacher’s historic record at the Nürburgring in October 11

The last Portuguese Grand Prix took place in Estoril, near Lisbon, in September 1996 – when Williams, now last in the championship and without a point, was dominant and won the one-two race with Canada’s Jacques Villeneuve and Damon Hill
