World News – GB – NRL 2020: Wolves of Warrington respond to speculation Gareth Widdop could return to Australia

Warrington Wolves insist star playmaker Gareth Widdop has not asked to cut short his stint with England’s Super League club

The 31-year-old England international has secured a compassionate release from the last two years of his contract with St George Illawarra at the end of the 2019 season

He signed a three-year deal with The Wire, but has been linked with a shock return from the NRL to the Dragons as part of a swap deal with Corey Norman in August

While that deal was unsuccessful, a News Corp report on Saturday claimed the 195 NRL veteran for Melbourne and the Dragons was making an effort in England away from his three children, who live in Australia

Several NRL clubs are reportedly monitoring Widdop’s situation if he chooses to return Down Under in the coming months

While the 29-test veteran for England and Great Britain apparently has options in Australia, he would likely have to take a $ 300,000 pay cut to return to the NRL

Despite new speculation, Wolves general manager Karl Fitzpatrick said Widdop’s side had given no indication he wanted to break out of his lucrative contract

« The club’s position and understanding has not changed since this issue was previously raised, » Fitzpatrick told the Warrington Guardian, referring to the rumored exchange deal for Norman

Widdop made his freshman debut for The Storm in 2010 and established himself as a star in the NRL before joining the Dragons in 2014
